TOYOTA HIACE/GRANVIA

"I agree with you about how desirable a 4x4 turbo diesel 5-speed van would be. I also have wanted to import a Hiace for a long time now. Here are some of the problems/solutions I encountered:
1. It is completely illegal.
2. If the illegal vehicle is discovered it will be impounded and crushed, and the owner would receive a large fine and possible jail time.
3. The imported Hiaces are all right-hand drive, so it would very difficult to secretly import one, switch the VINs with a USA one and pretend it is a USA van.
4. It might be easier and more legal to import a front clip -- the front half of a van. This would include the engine, tranny, possibly the transfer case, computer, and other essential parts, and then do an engine swap wit a USA van.
5. I know that some of the Range Rover guys have successfully imported [illegal] Rovers by having the engines removed first, and then regestering the trucks here as "assembled vehicles." I don't know the details of how this works, but it might be an option.... But you still would have a right-hand drive van that would possibly attract the kind of attention that would take away your van. I just don't know, but this "assembled vehicle" thing might be the only way to somewhat legally import and own a diesel 4x4 turbo diesel Toyota van.
6. Someone (one of the Canadian importers) suggested that an American could purchase one of their vans, and then "lease" the van form the importer, returning once a year to renew the registration, inspections, etc.
7. The van could be registered to a Canadian -- do you have any Canadian frineds or family members who would let you "give" them the van so it can be registered there while you drive it in the USA?
8.You could simply do the illegal thing and assume that at some point "the man" will catch up with you and take it away.
9. Maybe it is possible to import a left hand drive one from somewhere else -- South America, Australia, or Africa.
10. Or you could choose a different vehicle like a Diesel Unimog with fast axles, a domestic 4x4 diesel conversion van, a diesel AWD Audi 3000 wagon (some had factory locking differentials!), or some other similar thing. Then there are the gas vehicles that would make excellent candidates for a gat to diesel conversion like a civilian Volvo C303, VW Syncro Vanagon or Quantum Syncro Wagon -- these came with factory locking differentials -- or any of the other hard to find 4x4 vans.
Also some of the Toyota Previa Vans were AWD with 5-speed transmissions. Some of those might even have superchargers, but these are fairly difficult to find."
Θα μου πείτε και τι μαυτό;
Handbook: " not for 'off road' driving but having said that it certainly works on wet/boggy/slippy landscapes that aren't too undulating."
3)Eπίσης:
"no diff lock facility "
